Cath Wilkins, an Open University Associate Lecturer among her other jobs, gave an interesting presentation this morning at the Teaching Mathematics with Online Tutorials conference. I’ve reported before on the Elluminate maths trials at the OU. She teaches on the OU MSc Programme which has 500 students actively studying on it and is probably the biggest online maths masters in the World.

I enjoyed visiting with Patti and my classmates online using the syncronous tool Elluminate. Elluminate is easy to use. The navigation bar is user friendly and the environment is clean and not cluttered with buttons and lists. To realize the full benefit of Elluminate one needs a high speed connection, preferrably a LAN or cable modem.

Elluminate is an incredible way to hold distance education classes. I like the interaction and I think it is a user friendly technology. I did not have any difficulty opening up my class. I like the use of the white board and that all students could use it during class.

I love shoping, but I’m not a fan of those products that claim they are “one size fits all or most.” Because, quite often, they don’t! On the other end of the spectrum, I hate those stores that have so much product you can’t navigate the display floor. I find almost endless choices overwhelming.

Reflections on Using Elluminate

Elluminate has an incredible array of functionality for teachers and students to interact at a distance. As long as the student and teacher have agreed upon a time to meet the work session can be synchronous. It is also possible for the teacher (or moderator) of the session to record the session for review later. This trumps live lectures for a lot of reasons. I don't know how many times I would like to have reviewed what I covered in a lecture, with no ability to do so.

Supporting the Online Instructional Cycle

So just what is the online instructional cycle? At Elluminate, we define it as what happens before, during, and after the live online session. While dynamic interaction in the live virtual classroom is key to transforming teaching and learning on a global level, we wanted to look at how to leverage this real-time opportunity to enhance the experience for teachers and students as well as to promote the use of the enabling technology throughout the department, campus, and institution.

Funny how life is isn't it. Sometimes a smallish idea can manifest into something that could be great. Sue Tapp set up a Flash meeting tonight for Oz educators as an opportunity to touch base and make some connections outside of our blogs and twitter. She planted a seed and didn't even know it. It was great and I want to publicly thank Sue for making the effort to get this meeting organised - 20 people participated and it was useful but we did have problems with the setup. This led to the always thinking Sue Waters moving to ustream and then elluminate to see if they worked any better.

Adventures in Online Synchronous Communication - I am really loving Elluminate this year. The facility of audio, chat, whiteboard combined with being able to import PPT files and images, videos, take polls etc etc means it is a very powerful tool for synchronous work. Yes, I know it is expensive for a school, however don't forget the free V-Room that will take 3 people and is fully functional.
